Dell has unveiled two new Inspiron Z models that join the growing ranks of CULV-based thin and light ultra portable laptops.

The 13z and the 15z have 13.3.inch and 15.6-inch widescreen HD capable LED-backlit displays. You can even hook up a LCD or Plasma screen thanks to the HDMI port available on both Inspiron Z.

They both come with Intel CULV processors (either Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Solo ULV), Windows 7 Home Premium, a 1.3-megapixel camera, up to 6GB RAM and 320GB hard disk drive and WiFi.

Perhaps tellingly, both models also come with an optical drive, something that, cheaper (but not always thinner) netbooks do not have. Still, the new Inspiron Z should manage as much as 10 hours worth of battery life.

You will have to choose a 8-cell and 9-cell battery options respectively. Dell says that you will be able to recharge the batteries to 80 percent of their capacity in only one hour.

They are already available from Dell for £479 (for the 13z) and £499 (for the 15z), prices tht include VAT and shipping. They will be available in red and black colour schemes.
